The Olympus Pen FT is a prime example of ingenious camera design. Introduced in 1966, this masterpiece from the renowned designer Yoshihisa Maitani is a compact 35mm single-lens reflex (SLR) camera that stands out with its half-frame design. The Pen FT, inheriting the legacy of the original Pen F, added several enhancements, the most significant being the non-coupled light meter, albeit a bit cumbersome, was a notable feature for the era.
The Pen FT, being a half-frame camera, produces an 18x24mm negative, half the size of a traditional 35mm frame. The half-frame is oriented in a portrait fashion, and this allows for twice the number of images on a single roll of film, turning your 36 exposure rolls into 72 exposure rolls. This could be a huge advantage for prolific film shooters.
Another standout feature of the Pen FT is the system of interchangeable lenses. While the standard lens is considered the 38mm or 40mm, the range is wide, accommodating lenses as wide as 20mm to as telephoto as 800mm. Olympus also made a series of lens adapters for mounting lenses from other systems onto the Pen F and FT.
